Southern Vancouver Island Drives Perfect for Crisp Autumn Afternoons | DFH Real Estate

Southern Vancouver Island's trees are donning their fall colours fast. Winter will be here before you know it, but there's still time to get out and enjoy the fall leaves before they fade. Take a drive out to one of these five autumn destinations near our Victoria homes for sale and explore some of the most stunning landscapes our province has to offer.

5 Spots for a Fall Drive on Southern Vancouver Island

Goldstream Provincial Park

Address: Finlayson Arm Road, Langford, BC V9B 6H7

Goldstream Provincial Park has hundreds of acres of untouched old-growth deciduous forest on its grounds. This secluded retreat near our Langford homes for sale feels downright otherworldly when the trees break out into their fall colours.

If you drive over later in the season, you may even get to see the local salmon population running through Goldstream River. There are also many waterfalls, creeks, and streams running throughout the park that enhance the scenery and reflect the foliage's vivid colours. These features are marked on most maps and signposts that detail the park's trail network, including the one available on their website.

Kinsol Trestle

Address: Cowichan Valley, BC V8H 2E4

Kinsol Trestle is the largest trestle on the popular Cowichan Valley Trail. The structure's flat boardwalk construction makes it easy for people with mobility issues to spend time here. Most of the surrounding trees have their fall foliage on display by October, and you might spot the salmon in the Koksilah River jumping upstream soon after. Our real estate agents always make sure to visit at least once during this time of year!

With the path standing 145 feet above the ground, you'll get a great view of the landscape without having to enter the forest itself. Drive up and take a walk on the trail, enjoy a picnic at the picnic tables, or snap some incredible photos for your Instagram reel.

Maple Mountain

Address: Maple Mountain Road, Duncan, BC V9L 5X7

If you've got some hiking experience and are up for a challenge, consider driving out to Maple Mountain this fall. This towering peak just north of our Cowichan Bay homes for sale features an out-and-back trail leading to the mountaintop that takes about 3 hours to complete. Make it all the way up to be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the maple trees in their fall colours, the waters of Maple Bay, and the shores of Salt Spring Island.

There are also a few easier trails you can take if you don't think you're ready for the full climb. All of them take you through the forested parts of the mountain, and some feature extra points of interest like lakes and waterfalls.

Esquimalt Lagoon

Address: Ocean Boulevard, Colwood, BC V9C 1B6

Esquimalt Lagoon is a migratory bird sanctuary located just minutes away from many of our Colwood homes for sale. It's best known for its abundance of giant Douglas fir trees, but there are more than enough deciduous trees to make this spot worth visiting for fall foliage fans. Look out for cedar, arbutus, and oak trees sprinkled among the evergreens.

Want a one-of-a-kind photo opportunity? Head up Charlie's Loop Trail to discover Hatley Castle, a jaw-droppingly beautiful stone building that will make your fall snapshots look like peeks into a fantasy land.

Gowlland Tod Provincial Park

Address: Ross Durrance Road, Highlands, BC V9E 2A3

Located close to our secluded Highlands homes for sale and just a short drive away from Saanichton's city center, Gowlland Tod Provincial Park spans an impressive 1220 hectares. It's actually three parks in one:

  • Tod Inlet
  • Mackenzie Bight
  • Caleb Pike

All three sub-parks can be accessed with a day pass for the main park. Visit to enjoy gorgeous views of the autumn leaves and surrounding rocky cliffs and walk more than 25km of hiking trails through wooded areas. If you're comfortable on the water, you can also enjoy the scenery on a boat at Tod Inlet.
