The Thrifty Foods Victoria Day Parade is one of the largest parades held in Canada and celebrates the same Queen Victoria our city was named after. The procession begins at 9 a.m. and runs down Douglas Street starting from Mayfair Shopping Centre, ending at the corner of Courtney Street three hours later at noon. You'll see floats and costumed performers, marching bands and vintage cars, and even a few local celebrities. Stick around afterward to enjoy live music, food trucks, and an artisan's market filled with local goods.

Victoria's Highland Games and Celtic Festival is back for another year! This annual celebration of Celtic culture is an action-packed event featuring everything from informational booths and demonstrations to Highland dancing, bagpiping, and Gaelic football competitions. This year's event will be held at Topaz Park on May 17th from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and May 18th from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 for one day or $30 for a two-day pass. Discounted rates are available for seniors and youth aged 12 to 18.

Part mechanical showcase and part classic spring carnival, the Luxton Spring Fair has something for every member of your family to enjoy. From May 15th to 18th, attendees can look at antique farm equipment, visit the Heritage Museum, and watch demonstrations from the Vancouver Island Blacksmith Association. While admission to the fairgrounds is free, there will also be a separate area with paid midway rides and carnival games to enjoy. Awakening Chinatown is an annual event put together by the Victoria Chinatown Museum Society on the last Sunday of May (Asian Heritage Month). Spectators can join Victoria's Chinese community for a day of traditional dance, drumming, calligraphy, opera, fortune-telling, and more. The festivities will take place on May 25th from noon to 5:30 p.m. on Chinatown's Fisgard Street. The event is free to attend, but guests are encouraged to shop at some of the on-site booths set up by local Chinese-run businesses.

The Urasenke Tankokai Victoria Association will also be celebrating Asian Heritage Month this May with their Japanese Tea Ceremony event. Slated for May 17th from 11 a.m. to noon in the Royal BC Museum's conference hall, this quiet demonstration offers guests some insight into the art of chado, or "the way of tea." Experienced Japanese practitioners will pour and serve a pot of brewed tea according to traditional customs, all while wearing beautiful cultural dress. It's free to attend and easy to fit into even the busiest Saturday schedule.
