Cozy Adventures: Keeping Your Pup Active During Winter | DFH Real Estate

If you have a dog in your life, you know how difficult it can be to make sure they get enough exercise during B.C.'s cold winter months. Planning special trips for the two of you is a great way to keep yourself motivated until spring comes. Many of our real estate agents are dog owners too. Here are some of the places they like to take their pets for winter walks around Victoria.

  • Niagara Falls Creek Trail - 2930 Trans-Canada Highway. Victoria, BC V9B 5T9
Niagara Falls Creek Trail is a dog-friendly trail that takes hikers through one of the most visually impressive parts of Goldstream Provincial Park, a natural haven near our Langford homes for sale. It's a short path that takes less than an hour to complete and is mostly on level terrain, making it a good choice for novice hikers and their canine companions. On top of the exercise, you and your pooch will also enjoy incredible views of the snowy woods and the slender 50-foot waterfall that gives the trail its name. Watch out for flooding from the nearby creek, though; the waters tend to rise during the winter months and may make some parts of the trail more difficult to traverse.

  • Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park - 5267 Patricia Bay Highway, Victoria, BC V8Y 1S8
Elk/Beaver Lake Regional Park features a mostly flat 10km loop trail that is perfect for taking your dog on long afternoon strolls. The path circles the edges of both lakes, offering serene views of the still water and the surrounding parkland. It's also conveniently located just around the corner from many of our Victoria homes for sale, making it easy for city dwellers to reach whenever their dogs need some time outdoors.

  • Bear Hill Hiking Trail -  Bear Hill Road, Victoria, BC V9E 2J3
Bear Hill Hiking Trail offers a moderately challenging hike with more than 100m of elevation gain on its short path. You and your dog will both love the thrill of conquering the climb. When you reach the end, you'll be rewarded with a stunning panoramic view of North Saanich and the Haro Straight.

  • Mill Hill Regional Park – Atkins Avenue, Langford, BC V9B 6M8
Mill Hill's long, steep trail near Langford homes for sale takes about an hour and a half to complete and can be tricky for inexperienced hikers. If you and your dog are up to the challenge, though, you'll both get great exercise making your way up the sloping dirt and gravel paths. Trek all the way to the top to get a bird's-eye view of Esquimalt Harbour and the surrounding forests.

  • Upper Thetis Lake Trail - Highland Road, View Royal, BC V9B 6H9
Upper Thetis Lake Trail is a quiet, well-maintained trail that runs along the banks of Thetis Lake. Located a short drive away from our View Royal homes for sale, it will take you and your dog a little less than two hours to hike the entire 5km path. The trail's gentle inclines make it easy for the two of you to go at your own pace, and with the lake and its surrounding cliffs and trees right next to you while you walk, you'll always have some beautiful scenery to look at.

  • Sooke Potholes Provincial Park – Sooke River Road, Sooke, BC V9Z 1K7
Sooke Potholes Provincial Park near our Sooke homes for sale has lots of space for leashed dogs to roam, including several trails that meander through the dense forest. Most of these paths are easy to navigate, but a few pass over rocky terrain or require some uphill movement. Take your furry friend on a stroll along the paths near the Sooke River and you both might just spot some local wildlife.
